Biographical notes for John Barrett
John was born on 2 October 1795, in Yorkshire, England. He was baptised at Ripley on 15th January 1796. He arrived in Hobart on the SS Brixton on 21st January 1823. He was a free settler and plied the trades of grocer and brickmaker. He lived at 11 Elizabeth St. Hobart. He died on 1 July 1869, from 'softening of the brain'. He married Hannah nee Field on 28th April 1824, at St Davids, Hobart. She was born in 1799 at Warwickshire(?), and died on 1st January 1840.

Jim Barrett has provided me with copies of three letters he wrote, as follows :
Hobart Town, Dec 10th, 1823.
Sir, (To his honourable Lieut. Governor Sorrell.)
Having recently arrived by the Brixton in this colony, wishes to enclose and build immediately. Beg leave to request the favour of a town allotment for that purpose in Hobart Town. I have the honour to be your honour's most humble servant,
John Barrett.

Hobart Town, January 3rd, 1824.
Sir, (To his honourable Lieut. Governor Sorrell.)
Your honour's memorialist, having arrived by the 'Brixton' Jan. Last, and has by him a quantity of bricks and other materials, wishes to enclose and build and beg leave to request the favour of an allotment for that purpose in Hobart Town.
I have the honour to be your honour's most humblest,
John Barrett.

Hobart Town, April 27th 1824.
Sir, (To A P Robinson, Secretary to his honour the Lieut. Governor.)
I request you will be pleased to move his honour the Lieutenant Governor to grant a licence for the solemnisation of marriage without publication of Banns between John Barrett - single man, and Hannah Field - single woman, both of Hobart Town, and I do hereby aver that no lawful impediment exists to the said marriage, and that both parties are above twenty one years of age.
I have the honour to be, sir, your obedient servant.
