They then moved to St Arnaud in Victoria, where he was involved in farming, shops, sale yards and auctioneering. His drapery store is still run by his descendants. Sarah died here in 1886.
In 1889 he remarried, and, leaving the business in the hands of his elder children, he took his wife and younger children to Geelong. Here, he had successful shops and also the contracts for building the Richmond bridge and the Richmond sewerage. He was also a councillor in Geelong, and later in St Arnaud when he returned.
