Biographical notes for William Bray
William came to Australia aboard the 'Trafalgar' with his mother and sisters, arriving on 28 June 1854. The family settled in Uraidla, and William left in about 1855 aged 16 years. With a horse and dray, William carried and sold supplies at the various gold rushes in Western Victoria. On a trip back home to Uraidla, he married his first wife Sarah Shueard at Mt Lofty. Three of their children were born here.

There is an entry in the SA Biographical Index :
BRAY, William, parents William and Catherine. Born 26/2/1839, St Austell, CON ENG. Arrived 1854 Trafalgar. Depart to Victoria ?.Occupation Farmer. Residence New Tiers, Balhannah, Uraidla. Married 4/2/1860, Blakiston, SA, Sarah nee SHNEAD, parent Robert. Born c1841

They then moved to St Arnaud in Victoria, where he was involved in farming, shops, sale yards and auctioneering. His drapery store is still run by his descendants. Sarah died here in 1886.

In 1889 he remarried, and, leaving the business in the hands of his elder children, he took his wife and younger children to Geelong. Here, he had successful shops and also the contracts for building the Richmond bridge and the Richmond sewerage. He was also a councillor in Geelong, and later in St Arnaud when he returned.
