Biographical notes for Duncan Buchanan
Duncan Buchanan was born in Glendaruel, near Glasgow, Scotland, in 1819. With a brother, he went to America. They parted company there, and Duncan came on to Australia. As there is no shipping record in South Australia, it is likely he arrived into Victoria or elsewhere. While in America, he lost an eye, apparently in a fight. The sewn up eye can be clearly seen in photographs held by Joan Keightley.

Duncan married Christina McArthur in the Mt Gambier area. Christina was from Scotland. He was involved in drainage works in the South-East of South Australia. He set up residence at Fair Valley, some two miles south east of Mt. Gambier. From the photograph we have, it is quite an imposing residence. The Biographical Index of South Australians shows Duncan as a farmer and grazier, with residences at Mt. Gambier and Yahl.

Duncan died in Mt. Gambier on 30 Jan 1890, and is buried in the Mt Gambier Cemetery. His death was recorded in the local Mt. Gambier paper as follows :
"One of the oldest residents of this District passed away on Thursday morning (30 Jan 1890), when Mr. Duncan Buchanan, farmer, died at his residence, Mt Gambier East. Mr. Buchanan was born in Scotland in 1819 and was thus in his 71st year when he died. About 1856 he sailed for Australia and came direct to the South-east. After a few years as stockman for Neil Black, he took up the farm at Gambier East, about two miles south east of the town, on which he remained until his death. He leaves a widow, five sons and five daughters. Two of the latter are married to the Messrs. H.H. Barrett and H. Gaillard."

The Biographical Index has the following entry for Duncan :
Born 1819 Scotland. Died 30 January 1890. Arrived in Australia in 1853. Occupations were farmer and grazier. Residences were at Mt Gambier and Yahl. Married in 1956, to Christina MacArthur, whose parent was Peter. Their children were John (1860 - ), Flora, Mrs. Gaizzard, Archibald (1869-1936), 3 sons, 3 daughters.
