His obituary was published in 'The Observer' 15 August 1914 :
The death is announced of Mr Louis Meincke, a prominemt townsman of Kapunda. On Friday, he was conducting his business at the railway station when he ruptured a blood vessel in his head, and he died from paralysis on Monday afternoon. Mr Meincke was in his 80th year. He was a native of Schleswig, where he was born on October 7, 1835. He served at sea out of Hamburg, and came to South Australia on one of the old windjammers, or, as he called it, "in an old tub", more than 50 years ago. He was in the Government Pilot Service for a time, and his eldest son, Mr Frederick Meincke, was born on the Old Port Lightship.
Mr Meincke went to Kapunda in 1855, and afterwards engaged in the carrying trade, and was connected with Hill, Mills an Co., Graves and Co., and the South Australian Carrying Company, eventually getting all the Kapunda carrying business into his own hands. During the last 50 years his trollies must have handled 10,000 tons of wheat and 30,000 tons of general merchandise yearly without hitch. He was just and generous to his men, and his unfailing courtesy to the general public was much appreciated.
Although he did not take a very prominent part in public affairs, he was at one time councillor for West ward, and was a very old member of the Masonic Lodge of Light, No. 11, which he joined in 1871, of which he was a past master. He attended the last meeting of the Lodge in July. Last year a brother of Mr Meincke, whilst on a world's tour, paid him a visit, and it was an affecting meeting, as the brothers had not seen one another for 58 years. In addition to the widow, the survivors are Messrs. Frederick and Julius Meincke and Miss Edith Meincke, and Mrs Evan James of Kapunda; Mrs F Groth, Broken Hill; and Mrs Hambly, Mile End; besides 27 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. (end of obit.)
He arrived at Port Adelaide on 28 June 1854 on the 'Trafalgar', the same ship as his future wife and her family. He was a mariner from Germany, so probably was one of the crew. For some time, he served on the lightship off Semaphore, where his eldest son was born.
He was also known to be an interpreter for the early German workers in the Kapunda area. He progressed from railway porter to a carrier with a thriving business, carrying supplies from the railway to the copper mining communities. Apparently, his horse drawn waggons were a common sight in the area, and served as far away as Burra. (some information from David Bales)

Biographical notes for Phillipa Meincke nee Bray
Family stories show Phillipa as a very patriotic lady. David Bales grandmother remembered Phillipa lowering a flag to half mast and tolling a cow bell to mourn the passing of Queen Victoria.
Phillipa's obituary was published in 'The Observer', 14 August 1920, page 31 :
Mrs Phillipa Meincke, an esteemed resident of Kapunda for 60 years, died on August 4. Born at St Austell, Cornwall, in 1835, she came to Australia 20 years later on the ship Trafalgar. Two years after her arrival she married Mr Louis Meinck, who predeceased her. The late Mrs Meincke had a wonderful memory and could recount conditions which prevailed during the Crimean war. A son - Mr J Langdon (Torrensville) - and four daughters - Mesdames E James (Kapunda), Hambl (Hilltown), and Groth (Broken Hill), and Miss Meincke (Kapunda) still survive.
