Australian Skies - real places, real people
Embark : Front Cover
Embark by Col Wurth.

Embark is a historical and entertaining story set in outback Western Queensland, Australia, in the 1920's.

The story revolves around a horse, a struggling small selector or farmer, a worldly wise American, and the social forces that they have to confront, in an area renowned for producing some of the world's best gemstone opal.

This story is an amalgam of history and fiction but is blended to achieve a veracity and realism of this period of Australia's past which has largely been ignored.

The story begins with the struggles of life and an aging, barren, but successful race mare called ''Embark ''. Although the horse is a central theme throughout the story, she by no means dominates it; she blends in a way that portrays the many different facets of human nature that choose this distant country in which the story is set. The characters and events give us the ability to visualise the struggles of the period, when technology was in its infancy.

The story evolves in Australia and travels to the United States, New Guinea and South America, and is ultimately a saga of family, friendship and fate in the uncertain world of the period.
