A Country Squire - The Family History of the Squire and Keightley Families

Beginnings

Title, Preface, Introduction

This document is the start of my writing the collective family history of the SQUIRE and KEIGHTLEY families. The union began with the marriage of Graham to Anne, on 29 August 1970. This family is centred in Adelaide, South Australia, and the ancestral origins go back to England, Scotland and Germany/Denmark. Join us as we document the lives and stories of many people.

In this document, 'I' refers to Jan Squire, the author. This is the same person as Graham mentioned above, due to my gender change (correction), in 1997.

Structure, Sources, Methodology, Proof standards

I intend this production to be primarily a digital affair. Family surnames extend into other family names, and my focus is to address each surname independently, including the inevitability of family overlap between the surname segments. Once this introductory section is complete, each Surname segment will stand alone, with very similar structure and layout. Differences will be evident according to the number of known ancestral generations, the number of families units, and the amount of information I have been given or discovered.

I have been gathering information since the early seventies, but it is only since about 2010, when I retired, that I have been actively conducting research. I have access to considerable information as a result of my  membership of Genealogy SA, in South Australia, and digital memberships with Findmypast and The Genealogist give me access to UK records.

I try to follow professional genealogy standards, and have undertaken studies with the National Institute of Genealogical Studies, based in Canada. I have completed their English Certificate, and have a few subjects left to attain the Australian Certificate. I am completing the remaining course elements as they are written.

I attempt to validate every detail and fact I present here, but sometimes that is not possible. I have access to microfiche copies of original birth, death and marriage certificates for South  Australia,  up to certain cutoff dates. Much of the information on the web is secondary rather than original, and so there is some risk in relying on these indexes. I attempt to cross check multiple Sources where possible, however, I cannot warrant that the information provided is 100%accurate. I am always happy to be challenged about the accuracy of particular information, especially where there is compelling new information available.

Each family surname will be accorded the space to discuss their origins, the pathways taken by descendent generations, details of the main family events, together with snips from newspapers and other resources where I have permission to do so. I will link family groups to surrounding families, and also to the major world events of the time. This work will emphasize events in Australia, with full, known descendant lists of the families making the trip to Australia.
